Prominant Republicans have been firing back and forth over the past few days, as just who leads the party is still far from clear. Michael Steele began one fracas as he got back to his loose-lipped ways.CNN breaks it down:
Steele, guest-hosting on Bill Bennett’s radio show Friday, cast doubt on Romney’s conservative bona fides and blamed the Republican base for rejecting Romney last year because “it had issues with Mormonism” and was unsure of Romney’s commitment to opposing to abortion rights. Those comments aren’t sitting too well with Romney’s political team.
“Sometimes when you shoot from the hip, you miss the target,” said Romney spokesman Eric Ferhnstrom. “This is one of those times.”
ThinkProgress offers audio of Steele’s statement. He later apologized, saying he was taking out of context.Today there’s a new conflict. In a column for Fox News, Mike Huckabee suggests that it’s “hard to keep from laughing out loud” and Eric Cantor et al’s National Council for a New America listening tour.
A new group was recently formed that is calling itself a group of experts for the purpose of making the Republican Party attractive to voters again. The strategy is supposedly to go on a listening tour so they can talk to the American people and hear what people are concerned about.
It’s hard to keep from laughing out loud when people living in the bubble of the Beltway suddenly wake up one day and think they ought to have a listening tour; even funnier when their first earful expedition takes them all the way to the suburbs of Washington, D.C.
We’ll keep you posted on Cantor’s response.
