Mark Sanford, the former South Carolina governor whose political career was derailed by an extra-marital affair in 2009, reportedly asked ex-wife Jenny Sanford to run his comeback campaign.
According to a report in New York Magazine, Sanford asked his ex to run his current campaign for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District after she informed him that she wouldn’t run for the seat herself:
According to Jenny, she had already told Mark she would be taking a pass on the race the day before, at the funeral of a mutual friend. So when Mark came to visit her, he arrived with a proposal. “Since you’re not running, I want to know if you’ll run my campaign,” he said. “We could put the team back together.”
Jenny told him, in so many words, that wasn’t going to happen. Mark made one last appeal.
“I could pay you this time,” he said.
Jenny Sanford ran her then-husband’s campaign for Congress back in 1994. Sanford is running in the special election to fill the seat of Sen. Tim Scott, who was appointed to the Senate by Gov. Nikki Haley.
